In Brazil, reading is a habit for a few. Schooling and literacy leave much to be desired. There was a time when public schools were sought after. Today, private schools are the most sought-after. What is left for the poorest? They lack schooling and literacy—the consequence is a gap between education and culture. The Hebrew (Jewish) people are in constant search of information, knowledge, and prosperity. Reading is encouraged from an early age. At the age of 13, boys and the age of 12, girls must read the Torah in the Synagogue: bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah, respectively. Sefer Torah, the Jewish code of conduct. Talmud: study with debates and questions.
