Modal verbs “dever” and “ter que” in Brazilian Portuguese spoken in Helvécia (Bahia)

This paper describes the expression of modal necessity through auxiliary verbs in the rural dialect, formed by Afro-descendants, of Helvécia (state of Bahia, Brazil). The focus is on describing the behavior of the auxiliaries dever (‘should’) and ter que (‘have to’) in various modal contexts (cf. Scarduelli, 2011; Pessoto, 2014), namely: epistemic, deontic, dynamic, teleological and bouletic. The hypothesis we seek to verify is that, despite still being in variation in some contexts, the two auxiliaries have specialized for distinct modal contexts, with dever expressing mostly epistemic modality and ter que expressing non-epistemic modalities. We also analyzed the distribution by age groups, to verify whether the two auxiliaries are in stable variation or changing in progress. The corpus analyzed is of interviews from the Vertentes Project, which gathers sociolinguistic interviews of rural and urban communities in the state of Bahia.
